The proposal takes the form of a refined kitchen and dining extension, conceived as a modern intervention that remains grounded in the language of the historic building. A palette of traditional back-bedded Cotswold stone, timber detailing and slimline glazing creates a quiet dialogue between old and new, allowing the architecture to feel both complementary and clearly contemporary.
The extension is defined by a striking mono-pitched roof form, designed to capture light and frame views across the surrounding landscape. Continuous high-level glazing draws afternoon sunlight deep into the interior, while generous overhangs provide shade, shelter and a strong sense of horizontality.
Internally, the new spaces are arranged around openness, light and connection. Expansive glazing and sliding doors dissolve the threshold between house and garden, extending the dining space outward onto a covered terrace and creating a series of sheltered external rooms that can be occupied throughout the seasons.
Particular attention has been given to proportion, materiality and atmosphere, with every element carefully modelled and tested through the studio’s 3D design process to ensure the intervention sits harmoniously alongside the listed cottage. As part of this process, immersive VR technology and headset walkthroughs were used to explore scale, light and spatial experience in real time, helping both the design team and client shape and refine the proposal collaboratively.
The result is a calm and carefully crafted addition, contemporary in expression, yet deeply rooted in its historic and rural setting.
