Materials: Reclaimed brick, exposed oak and historic timber framing, natural stone, lime-based materials, large-format glazing and traditional clay roof tiles.
Working closely with the existing fabric and rhythm of the original timber frame, the design seeks to preserve the agricultural character and honesty of the barn while introducing calm, light-filled spaces tailored to modern living. The proposal carefully balances conservation and contemporary architecture retaining the building’s historic form, proportions and materiality while introducing generous glazing, double-height volumes and refined modern detailing.
Exposed structural timbers become a defining feature internally, framing expansive open-plan kitchen, dining and living spaces that connect directly to landscaped terraces and views across the surrounding countryside. Large glazed openings are carefully integrated within existing bays to maintain the integrity and legibility of the historic structure, creating a seamless relationship between inside and out.
The interiors celebrate warmth, texture and craftsmanship, combining reclaimed brick, natural timber and soft contemporary finishes with dramatic vaulted spaces and mezzanine galleries. Natural light is drawn deep into the building through carefully positioned glazing and double-height voids, enhancing the sense of openness while respecting the barn’s original character.
Developed through detailed 3D modelling and visualisation, the project explores how a listed agricultural building can be thoughtfully and respectfully reimagined preserving its heritage significance while giving it a new life for contemporary family living.
